Connecting care for a healthy tomorrow

The Victorian Minister for Health has approved the voluntary amalgamation of Alexandra District Health and Eastern Health.

What is happening?

The Victorian Minister for Health, Ingrid Stitt, has formally approved the voluntary amalgamation of Alexandra District Health and Eastern Health, following a comprehensive business case and staff and community engagement.

The amalgamation builds on the services’ strong existing partnership, with around 40 per cent of hospital care for Alexandra residents already delivered by Eastern Health.

Coming together as one health service will help meet the changing needs of the Alexandra and district community, including an ageing population and growing demand for specialist and chronic care.

It will also create greater capacity to expand local services and strengthen connections between Alexandra and metropolitan healthcare.

What does this mean for you?

The amalgamation will mean more specialist care and services available in Alexandra, including:

  • More low-complexity surgery
  • A new dialysis service
  • Improved access to diagnostic services

Better coordination between the two services will make it easier for patients to move from referral through to treatment and recovery, with more care available closer to home.

The amalgamation will also create more training, education and career opportunities for staff.
